Movement is difficult when you have pain in the back – in fact you can feel stiff and immobilized sometimes. It is generally the middle and lower back which is affected when you complain of back pain, but even the upper back can hurt.   The pain is spasmodic in the areas around the spine.  At times, the pain radiates into the thighs, buttocks hips and even the leg or neck.  Leaning either forward or backwards causes severe pain.

 

Causes:

Backpain results when there is strain on the muscles, nerves and ligaments surrounding the spine.The strain can occur either due to injury or sprain or even overuse.   Herniated discs which protrude on to a nerve in the area can cause severe pain in the lower back.  Abdominal disorders such as appendicitis, overian cysts, kidney or bladder infection can also be the reason why some persons suffer back pain.  At times, the spinal cord is pinched between discs, leading to intense pain in the back.  Backpain is also one of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The later stages of pregnancy can also put a lot of strain on the back, causing it to hurt.

 

Treatment:

In treating your backpain at home take care not to put any undue strain on the back.  This means, you should avoid bending or leaning backwards or forwards,  and while sitting, ensure that you support your spine fully with an upright pillow.

 

Initially, you can go for bed-rest to ease the back pain.  Sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees is a comfortable position.  If sleeping on your side, have a pillow between your knees for back support.  If bedrest does not help matters in a day or two, the best advice for you is to try to get up and get moving.  Try to move around slowly at home,  without straining the back.  In time, the pain will ease and you will be able to move around more easily.

 

Simple exercises  are also recommended to relieve back pain. You can try the following as soon as you feel good about doing them:

 

Lie in prone position on the floor, and slowly rise up on your elbows, thus arching your back. Hold for 30 minutes, relax and repeat.

 

Stand with your feet slightly apart, hands supporting lower back, fingers pointing downwards. Very gently bend the back backwards from the waist, keeping knees straight.  Hold for 10 sec. Relax and repeat.  Do this as many times as you want, throughout the day.

 

You can also massage your back with the help of a tennis ball.  Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the bed.  Place the tennis ball under the lower back and drop the back on to the ball.  Keep changing the position of the ball till the entire affected back is massaged.    Oil massage of the back is also very effective provided it is done carefully.

 

Lying on your back with a hot water bag under the affected area helps a graet deal.

 

Wearing a sacral belt to support the back is also another way in which you can relieve yourself of the pain.  Continuous use of the belt till the pain disappears is recommended.

 

Include a lot of dark green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, berries, fruits, olive oil,  turmeric and ginger in your diet, to cut back inflammation.
